Prebiotic dietary fibres and improved digestive health
A good digestion is vital for a healthy life. It helps our body to absorb all the nutrients it needs to run smoothly. A healthy digestive system in turn requires sufficient dietary fibre intake.
Although vast parts of the world’s population are still lacking sufficient fibre intake, many consumers are already actively asking for convenient food and drinks that include more dietary fibres.
BENEO offers a quality range of Orafti® Inulin and Orafti® Oligofructose naturally extracted from chicory root, suitable to bring your products to a fibre-enriched status. Beyond that, our Functional Fibres nourish your colon micro flora – add a prebiotic plus.
What to know about digestive health
Together with BENEO: Digestive Health claim
Customers working with Orafti® Inulin can launch products with a health claim on pack: “promotes digestive health”. Together with BENEO, stake your claim on digestive health!
The official wording of this 13.5 health claim “chicory inulin contributes to normal bowel function by increasing stool frequency” was published by the European Commission.
As it was based on proprietary scientific research by BENEO, it gives new opportunities for those product innovations using Orafti® Inulin. Ultimately with the goal to give consumers the benefit of a healthy and balanced digestive system.

Close that fibre gap
BENEO offers prebiotic dietary fibres from the chicory root, that support to an overall healthy intestinal environment. Not only do these functional fibres contribute to improved stool frequency, they also have a positive influence on our gut micro flora by supporting those bacteria regarded as “good bacteria” (i.e. good bacteria are those not being infective, not producing toxins, producing short-chain fatty acids when breaking down the prebiotic fibre and other beneficial substances like vitamins). This selective growth of the good bacteria is known in the scientific literature as the prebiotic effect.
Joining these chicory root fibres are our fermentable dietary fibres from barley: Orafti® β-Fit is a wholegrain barley flour, rich in beta-glucans. This barley flour consists of ~50% of fibre, as such a great solution to help people increase their fibre consumption in support of an improved digestive health.

Add the prebiotic plus
To maintain a well-balanced micro flora, the beneficial bacteria in our large intestine have to outnumber the pathogenic bacteria. Therefore it is essential to promote the growth of ‘good’ bacteria.
BENEO fibres reach the large intestine; in the colon they are selectively fermented by beneficial bacteria, in particular Bifidobacteria which are stimulated to multiply and the biomass is increasing. This remarkable characteristic qualifies them as ‘prebiotics’.
Recently, it has been shown how the fermentation products formed by the good bacteria from BENEO dietary fibres in the large intestine are taken up by our body and help to suppress hunger.
BENEO’s dietary fibres are the best documented prebiotics and fermentable fibres available on the market.
Maintaining and optimising a balanced microbiota supports gut health and is therefore part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle with a smart choice of ingredients in the normal diet, consumers can apply a „help yourself by eating smart“ approach. Such a nutrient would need to reach the colon intact, escaping the digestion process.
Chicory root fibres are soluble, prebiotic, fermentable dietary fibres.
While regular digestible food components are broken down and absorbed, nothing happens to chicory root fibres in the stomach and small intestine. In the colon, however, chicory fibres inulin and oligofructose are completely fermented, supporting the good bacteria, and thus promoting healthy gut flora, naturally.
